Few 18th
century examples of fine furniture can surpass the beauty of
block-front designs, which probably originated in Newport, Rhode
Island. This hand-carved mahogany chest, with its gorgeous shells,
stands 38 inches high by 43 inches long by 22 inches deep and
required close to 500 hours to complete. |

The design of
most of the lowboys of the Queen Anne period was exquisite.
They were low in height and almost invariably well proportioned.
The one pictured has unusually graceful lines. In addition
to its beautifully shaped legs, the shape of the feet on this
example is unique. It is one of the most gracefully shaped
feet ever seen on a piece of Queen Anne furniture. |
